MoonPrism began in 2002... on accident.
In June of 2002, I (Mallory) had been in love with Sailor Moon since I was 15, and at 16 I began taking art classes to basically make shrines to my fandom. My art teacher was very patient with me, although slightly annoyed that I always found some way to incorporate anime into my art projects. By second quarter of my sophomore year, I noticed all the projects with 100% got hung up on the wall outside the classroom. Guess who is highly competitive! My first project to be hung up was a dot painting (think Monet) of Super Saiyan Gohan from Dragonball Z. Another one of my teachers called it a Pokemon and I almost freaked out. Those were good times.
I graduated high school in 2001. My plans were to become a super famous comic book writer/artist and own a fancy comic book shop with lots of action figures and resin kits. I worked on my comic book for what felt like ages, but the unfortunate reality was that I wasn't passionate about it. I didn't take care of my work. It was always strewn about the house, getting something spilled on it, getting dirty, or getting lost. That's when I attempted to start writing it out as a book, and that's when I realized I actually preferred novel writing to all that entails writing a comic.
In the meantime, I still wanted to do some sort of artwork, and being obsessed with Sailor Moon, I checked eBay. I started small, mostly with watercolors and sketches of the characters and I sold them on eBay. Then I was thinking about how cool it would be to dress like them (like I said, I was obsessed), so I scanned eBay for tiaras. There were none. The only tiaras there were were cardboard. I frowned and went on my merry way. A few months later, by pure chance, I was in a Hobby Lobby for the first time in my life and found a few sheets of metal. That very night, I made four tiaras with the metal using super glue and some jewels from walmart and some elastic. They were pretty basic. I drew the curvature by hand and cut them out and then used the end of the scissors to scrape the 'design' in. I made one for Mercury, Mars, Venus, and Jupiter, and they were super cute. My friend Luke took the picture with his fancy digital camera (they were like $500 back in the day) and I used my mom's eBay account to list them for $10. It was 10PM. By 9AM the following morning, all of them had sold. I was shocked. People started emailing me asking if I'd be listing them again, so I got a ride back to Jefferson City (the nearest Hobby Lobby is there, and that's a 2 hour drive) to get more metal and make lots more tiaras. I couldn't keep them in stock!
In August, I decided to get a bit more frisky. My next project was Saturn's glaive. It was, for lack of a better word, rudimentary. Wood shoddily put together, the bottom was made of putty, the top was made of part of a broken lamp, and the blade was foam board. It was not pretty in comparison to what I do these days, but then it was pretty bad. My stepdad was appalled that it sold for $77 on eBay, but the customer was thrilled. That's when I decided to turn my personal website into a business website.
It was pretty leisurely there for a while. I would just make random things and sell them on eBay mostly. I even expanded on to Final Fantasy, and then just took commissions for anything. By 2007 I was busy pretty much all the time, but it wasn't until late 2007 when I opened a YouTube channel. That's when things really took off. I met a lot of really interesting people and started getting more and more commissions. As MoonPrism continues to grow bigger with more updated Sailor Moon stuff and non-Sailor Moon commissions, I grow as both an artist and a person. I really love doing this and I hope I can continue to do it for years to come.
I won't tell you I've won awards. I haven't. But people who have used props I've made have. Some of my work can be seen in Cosplay In America and I've even had work show up on the Academy Awards, held by Jack Nicholson. You can see him as Gandalf holding the staff I made on YouTube
Let's see what I can help you achieve.
